Rohit Bhargava has a good post up on how to use twitter for marketing purposes. He has some ideas:
1. Capture the live pulse of an event
2. Deepen a static experience through live commentary
3. Facilitate collaborative watching
4. Add a new dimension to promotions - Scavenger hunts, user generated content campaigns, and other reality based marketing promotions
Is Marketing on Twitter a good or bad idea? The above ideas are far from intrusive but where does the line get drawn? Or does it? What is stopping twitter from becoming a torrent of spam.....

Chicago Twitter party
In fact I'm trying to cover all those points above by organizing the first Chicago Twitter party during the city's first annual Looptopia event on May 11. I plan to use Twitter to provide realtime updates on all the music, arts, and performance events taking place around the downtown area during the 12 hours of the show. Hoping to attract other twitterers to help contribute or at least watch from afar. Http://twitter.com/1god
Absolutely a good idea!
All very good observations! Apparently RB is one of the guys actually doing some thinking on how to use Twitter.
It all depends on how you communicate with your customers to begin with. If you have a tight relationship with them already, and email them regularly for example, going the Twitter route will only help strengthen the bond with the most valuable of those customers.
There's about a dozen more ways to use Twitter (and its competitors) in marketing, spelled out in this new book: http://www.web2formarketers.com
