Twitterbar
I have just quickly knocked up a small firefox/flock extension, called Twitterbar, which allows you to post from your browsers addressbar. I guess this is a type of clone of the Firefox Twitter Search Plugin, there are however a few differences - mainly it is NOT fired off to twitter at the hit of the return/enter key and therefore not revealing all your browsing secrets…. 
Three ways to post using twitterbar:
1) Type your tweet, then click on the small green grey add icon which is to be found on the right of your addressbar:
When you mouse over the icon, it enlarges and tells you how many charaters you have left:
2) Type ‘ –post’ at the end of your tweet (that is space+hyphen+hyphen+post, doesn’t seem to show up very well on this blog!). The ‘ –post’ is not included in your tweet.
3) Drag in the twitterbar toolbar button anywhere you want (main toolbar -> right-click -> customize).
Other:
- You can also just hit the green grey icon to send the current webpage url as a tweet - it will add ‘Currently Browsing: ‘ to the front of the url.
- There is an optional toolbar button counter to drag on from the customise dialog.
Options:
Access the options by typing ‘ –options’ (that is space+hyphen+hyphen+options) or by going to tools > addons/extensions and selecting options of the twitterbar in the addons dialog.
- There are two post modes, safe and secure:
1) Secure (default) - prompts you for your username/password at the beginning of a browsing session when you first post. You will NOT have to re-enter this for the current browng session for every other post.
2) Safe - set up your username/password in the extension so you do not have to log in at the start of every browsing session. Stored ’securely’ in mozilla’s password manager. The twitter API is a little weird, and there are times that it might still prompt you for your username/password even when using this option (most likely to happen with your first ever post from the extension).
- Hide the green grey add button (if you prefer the other methods of posting or if it interferes with your theme).
- Open twitter in tab after post:
You can have your twitter load in a new tab after the post is successful.
- Change before URL text:
By default, the extension puts ‘Currently Browsing: ‘ in front of a URL tweet, this can be changed in the options dialog.
INSTALL: Click here to install twitterbar 0.0.6
If that does not work, right-click, save to desktop and then drag the xpi file into firefox/flock.
Known Issues:
- The speed at which twitterbar posts is wholly down to the twtter API and completely beyond my control - sometimes it can take a couple of seconds, other times it seems to hang for about 20

This extension is NOT…
This extension just adds to the number of ways to post to Twitter. It is not, and never will be, a twitterific type clone which allows you to view as well as post twitter content. I personally have twitterific running on my desktop and view this extension as a companion - i.e easily do a currently browsing tweet or normal tweet without swapping windows.

This extension has solved a major issue that I was having. I use Trillian. It would appear that twitter does not support Trillian plus I did not want to use the web interface.

Were you using safe rather than secure mode, and using your username rather than email address?
Also the twitter API is in it’s early stages and sometimes misbehaves, would you mind trying just one more time today?

However, there’s a small bug. Try posting a message with “&” and it will be cut there.
@ Dan1nl: Hmm, this one has me baffled a little, range in code is Firefox 1.5-3.0. Is this happening wth the latest version when you try installing from the website. Try downloading to your desktop and then dragging in the xpi.

Hello. First off thank you for creating this plugin. Secondly, I have a problem with it. I changed my password for my Twitter account and now, every time I try to twitter something using twitterbar, I am asked for my user name and password. How do I change my Twitter account information in Twitter so that it stops doing this?
I’ve tried messing around with the Secure mode and the other mode but I can never seem to be able to change my password in their and now this twitterbar is driving me insane!

Can you clarify whether the options dialog lets you change your password but it does not seem to take hold, or whether the options dialog will not let you change the password at all?

I’m using Twitterbar downloaded from the Mozilla site, and I’m having a problem. On my home computer it works perfectly, but at the office computer it shows “Posting to Twitter” forever and it won’t post or give you an error message either… What can be doing this?
Can you access the normal twiter website from work? If not then the extension will not work either.

and some times it just get back to normal but when I check twitter I don’t find any post there..
I am really trying to find solution for last 2 days but no luck so far.

thank you for the twitterbar. on the firefox addon page it states compatibility to Firefox 3.0a. I continued using the addon happily until Firefox 3 Beta 4 (which broke the plugin). Till Beta 3 everything went fine. Any plans to support the current Beta / the final release of Firefox 3? Or do I have to look out for an alternative already?
